He’s something altogether more banal, a defective robot manufactured by a powerful tech company, Kaslan, whose sleek Apple-like gadgets have all but overtaken every household. Chucky, who considers Andy his best friend, saw the old woman laughing with Andy, jokingly calling him "my new best friend." Since Chucky's homicidal doll brain now thinks that Andy replaced him, he uses his technological capabilities to hack into the old woman's ride share app - and ends up taking her on a deadly ride.Beneath all the nasty jolts and vicious bloodlettings in the new “Child’s Play” is almost enough material to furnish a mildly interesting episode of “Black Mirror.” A high-tech, ultra-gory reboot of the 1988 thriller that spawned a still-ongoing horror franchise, this new movie also turns on a creepy red-haired doll named Chucky, only this time he hasn’t been supernaturally possessed by the soul of a serial killer. One of the film's more frightening scenes comes when an elderly woman living in Andy and Karen's apartment building orders a "Kaslan Car" (read: Uber) to take her to bingo. ![]() Similar to an Alexa or other "smart" device, "Buddi" dolls offers a range of services once it's linked to a smartphone, including calling ride shares, controlling the thermostat, or playing music - giving Chucky a whole new range of ways to create mayhem. While the 1988 version featured a doll that had been possessed by the soul of a serial killer, the 2019 Chucky is much more insidious - not only is the doll evil by design, but, since he's designed to be synced to a smart phone, he has the ability to wreak havoc via technology, too. The 1988 film introduced audiences to the sinister plaything Chucky - and was blamed for two violent murders that took place in the U.K. "Star Wars" veteran Mark Hamill voices Chucky in the latest version of "Child's Play." While Hamill might seem like an odd choice for an evil doll, the actor has actually done quite a bit of voice work, providing the voices of characters like the Joker in the 1990s animated "Batman" series.Īlthough the story lines differ greatly, "Child's Play" is technically a remake of the 1988 film of the same name.
